Using Big Bird and Sesame Street to Learn Math and Language

In Bill Thompson's classic book, "Sesame Street," a young woman named Mabel tries to learn the alphabet. She does not have a great vocabulary, but she has an unusual talent for counting the numbers from one to 100. As her mother puts her through this difficult and embarrassing training, Mabel suffers from monopolies and fails to reach her goal. To make matters worse, her classmates take advantage of her lack of ability and they make fun of her.

Mabel finally gets her chance to visit the Big City in search of a school to enroll her in. While there, she meets street performers who help her increase her vocabulary and learn basic math. These "street performers" are portrayed by a pair of alien creatures called Big Bird and Flo. The two aliens help Mabel become a better learner and eventually help her reach the goal set by the Big City teacher, Mr. Teeth. The classroom is filled with children who participate in various activities, all directed by the famous television show.

One activity that is shown frequently on Sesame Street is "ENTRY," where a child must match a picture and sound. After she has done this, she has to say the number (usually around ten) before entering the room. If the child mumbles or stutters during this process, the camera then shows a glimpse of her mouth as she attempts to utter the word. Sometimes, the child's mouth goes down and she talks through her nose.

The "Words repeated" segment of the show helps reinforce a child's vocabulary and improve her grammar and spelling. Words repeated during this time are used in conversations between the characters. For example, Big Bird often repeats the words "bed," "beak," "bedtime," and "say." By hearing these words said by a live person, a child is more likely to understand the basic meaning behind them.

In addition to repeating words, Big Bird makes fun additions to his puppet's wardrobe. The wardrobe includes clothes for children's special occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. The wardrobe also has special items that help enhance a child's learning and improve her grammar. For example, one item has a pink bow on it that Big Bird uses to spell the word "beef."

A child's progress in learning how to spell words can be tracked by the letters she scribbles. In each episode, a child's name is written and a corresponding number is also written. As the child starts to repeat the letter, a streak of that letter will appear. At first, she will just see a single letter, but as she continues to repeat the letter, more letters will start to appear.

Another great way to give your child a head start when it comes to learning words is by using "verbs" to help reinforce learning. Elmo's puppets have a machine that runs on verbs! So, for example, if your child repeats the word "beef," Elmo will say the verb "beef."

The Sesame Street world has always promoted learning. Children are encouraged to use their imagination and explore new things. By encouraging your child's creativity, you are helping her to develop her mind and her abilities at an early age. One of the best ways to do this is through learning. So, be sure to check out all the great Sesame Street toys and other products for your little girl.

You can also incorporate learning into the classroom. For example, your child may repeat a series of numbers or other words in math class. Have her come up with her own set of words to learn. Then, when she gets them right, have her explain what she means by explaining what numbers mean or what words are being said.

Sesame Street and Big Bird are two great organizations to support young children in learning. Both of these wonderful organizations use colorful puppets to entertain the children. And, they use words to help teach the kids the words they are learning. You can even create your own puppets and act out your own learning games with the help of Big Bird and the other puppets on Sesame Street. There are countless places to use these puppets, and there is certainly a game to fit every child.

The world of entertainment is truly unlimited. With so many toys available for kids, parents have a lot of choices to make.
